National Center for State Courts

The National Center for State Courts (NCSC) is a non-profit corporation, headquartered in Williamsburg, Virginia, which has been providing research, education, information, technology, and direct consulting services to state and local court systems for more than 30 years. NCSC brings a broad range of resources to justice system studies, including an expert staff, a history of work with diverse jurisdictions nationally and internationally, and institutional links to other national court-related organizations. NCSC has performed evaluations and management studies in all areas of court management from small technical assistance projects in one-judge rural courts to comprehensive evaluations of entire state court systems. NCSC’s familiarity with the unique nature of courts and court-related offices enhances its ability to work effectively and efficiently with judicial officers, court staff, representatives of court-related agencies and organizations, and service providers. Over the last decade, NCSC has been involved in numerous research and consulting efforts focused on drug courts and other problem-solving initiatives. NCSC has:

• Tracked the growth of drug courts and problem-solving court-based programs.

• Studied the theoretical foundation on which drug courts are based.

• Provided consulting services and technical assistance to courts at all stages of planning, implementation and evaluation of drug courts.

• Reported on trends and best practices in drug courts and other problem-solving court-based programs.

• Published and disseminated a Toolkit for Problem-Solving Courts (2007).

• Developed performance measures for drug courts in 11 states and also developed performance measures for Mental Health Courts

• Provided staff support to the Joint Committee on Problem-Solving Courts of the Conference of Chief Justices and Conference of State Court Administrators (CCJ/COSCA).

• Provided access to information about drug courts and other problem solving courts through the NCSC Website, library, and publications.

• NCSC has conducted evaluations of drug court programs in Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri, Puerto Rico, and Virginia and has provided technical assistance and consulting services on evaluation to pilot drug court programs in Colorado.

• Conducted evaluations of community courts in New York and Philadelphia
